Teens Curb the Car Day - Sunday 30 June 1996
26 March 1996
Thousands of young people from all over the country are getting ready for Curb The Car Day on Sunday 30 June - and Friends of the Earth is urging others to sign up as well. They'll be slapping stickers on gas-guzzlers,giving away bottles of fresh air and getting "car potatoes" to leave their vehicles at home for the day, as well as a host of other wild activities.
Curb The Car Day is part of Friends of the Earth's Fuming Mad Campaign -which is being supported by a number of celebrities including Anna Friel,Michaela Strachan and Sean Maguire - and provides another opportunity for young people to show their huge concern for the environment.
Actress Anna Friel said:
"This is one of the most important campaigns around - and I'm asked to be involved in lots. It's not everyday that young people can take part in something and really feel like they're making a difference."
Curb The Car Day and the Fuming Mad Campaign reflect the proven widespread concern for the environment that is shown consistently in polls and enquiries to Friends of the Earth [see note 2]
Judith Ritchie, 16, from Bradford, will be joining in by making a video for Curb The Car Day...
"The stuff going on at Newbury shows up the problems caused by the car. Getting involved in Curb The Car Day can mean as little as catching a bus instead of sitting in a car - that way you're making an important contribution - and you'll feel better if you've done something."
The Newcastle region will be marking Curb The Car Day with a universal cheap bus and underground ticket.
NOTES TO EDITORS:
[1] Over 1,500 young people signed the Fuming Mad petition during the 4 days of the BBC Big Bash at the NEC last October.
[2] Friends of the Earth regularly receive hundreds of enquiries a week on environmental matters from young people and teachers.
[3] Details of a selection of lively and photogenic events for Curb the Car Day are available from Co-ordinator Sue Meagher.
