Don't fund road lobby - don't join RAC or AA

11 April 1996

Friends of the Earth is urging its car-owning supporters to remove their support from the road lobby by refusing to join the AA and RAC, and joining the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) [1] instead.

The appeal appears in the latest issue of Earth Matters, FOE's supporter magazine, and comes at a time when public concern about the environmental impact of the car in general and road-building in particular is extremely high.

Athena Lamnisos, Editor of Earth Matters, said:

"Both the AA and RAC are full members of the British Roads Federation which lobbies vigorously for more and wider roads. If you belong to one of these organisations you are buying more than just peace of mind - you are supporting road-building and the destruction and pollution it entails. The ETA offers a similar range of sevices and actively campaigns with other organisations for a sound and sustainable transport system for Britain, I would urge all car-owning supporters of FOE to join them."

The latest edition of Earth Matters, which is published on 15 April, concentrates on some of the issues surrounding the car such as the industry's centenary and the campaign against the Newbury Bypass. Earth Matters is sent to over 100,000 FOE supporters.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

[1] The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) was formed in 1990 and offers a similar range of breakdown services to the AA and RAC. It recently won a best buy award' from Carweek magazine.
