5 June 1996
Photo Opportunity 10am at Rack Marsh Bagnor, Newbury (meet at Blackbird pub)
Local campaigners will cordon off part of the Newbury bypass route at Rack Marsh, Bagnor on Wednesday 5 June in anticipation of a Government announcement later in the week that the area is to become a European nature reserve to protect a rare snail colony. Warning signs will also be posted telling the Highways Agency to keep off.
The Government announcement, which is anticipated within the next few days [1]is expected to confirm that part of the bypass route will be designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) to protect the rare Desmoulins Whorl Snail. SAC designation will mean that the internationally important snail will be protected under European law and that the road's impact on the snail will need to be reviewed.
Local protesters and campaigners from Friends of the Earth will be available for interview.
[1] An announcement is expected later this week that parts of the Newbury bypass route will be designated as a SAC. An announcement on who has been chosen to build the bypass is also expected.
