FOE Reaction to Climate Change Study

Commenting on the study, "The Second Review of the Potential Effects of Climate Change in the UK", written by the Climate Change Impact Review Group and released by the Department of the Environment at 12 noon today, Charles Secrett, Director of Friends of the Earth, stated:
"This is the best analysis yet of the potentially devastating impact of global warming on UK agriculture and water resources, human health and wild species and habitats. It is a warning to us all.
The Government's first priority must be to redouble its efforts to control greenhouse gas emissions, and persuade other countries to do the same. Friends of the Earth urges Mr Gummer to take the lead at next week's international climate talks in Geneva and demand tough targets for reducing polluting emissions."
Adaptation responses, such as conserving water supplies and creating a nationwide network of wildlife corridors' to help endangered species migrate, can help mitigate adverse climate change impacts. But, not enough is known about which impacts are going to hit where and when to be sure that adaptation will work.
"The UK should be investing in win-win' responses now. Energy saving and water conservation measures can bring economic, environmental and social benefits today while reducing the threat of climate change for future generations."
Charles Secrett and Anna Stanford, Climate Campaigner, will be attending the Press Conference at the Department of the Environment.
