Road traffic reduction bill passed by house of commons
28 February 1997
Friends of the Earth welcomed the successful passage of the Road Traffic Reduction Bill through the House of Commons, this afternoon [1].
Charles Secrett, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth said:
"This is wonderful news for the millions of people in Britain living in communities blighted by traffic congestion, pollution and the threat of road-building. I hope it will now pass swiftly through the House of Lords and onto the statute book."
The Road Traffic Reduction Bill was drafted and promoted by Friends of the Earth, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru and is being piloted through the House of Commons by Liberal Democrat MP Don Foster. The Bill will require local authorities to draw up plans to reduce traffic in their areas.
Notes
[1] The Road Traffic Reduction Bill was given its Third Reading in the House of Commons today. It was passed without a vote being taken and now passes to the House of Lords on March 14.
