Ten Days Left to Save the World

7 March 1997

Vested political and commercial interests have succeeded this week in blocking progress towards a global accord to prevent dangerous man-made climate change said Friends of the Earth today, one day before the end of United Nations talks on climate change. The gloomy outcome of the week-long talks in Bonn means that the chances of governments signing up to tough targets and timetables at the December climate summit in Kyoto are considerably diminished.

The representatives of hundreds of oil, coal and automotive companies attending the meeting have successfully lobbied the US Government in particular, which is now seen by campaigners as an international pariah on the issue of global climate change because of its refusal to commit to any reductions in pollution levels.

Dr Patrick Green, climate change campaigner for Friends of the Earth International said:

"With only ten negotiating days left before the global climate summit, governments remain bent beneath the tremendous pressure of the dinosaur fossil fuel industries. The world will remain on a path that will lead to dangerous climate change if these vested interests are not challenged."
