Road traffic reduction bill wins lords' approval
14 March 1997
The Road Traffic Reduction Bill passed another important stage on its way to the Statute Book, when it received its Second Reading in the House of Lords today (Friday 14 March 1997). Discussions for the progression of the Bill to its next stage in the Lords are currently taking place.
The Bill was promoted in the Lords by Baroness Hamwee who adopted the Bill after Liberal Democrat MP Don Foster steered it successfully through the House of Commons. It now stands a good chance of becoming law before the General Election.
The Bill requires Highways Authorities to draw up local traffic reduction reports, and then take action to cut traffic levels in their area. It was originally drafted by Friends of the Earth, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru.
Friends of the Earth's Parliamentary Officer Ron Bailey said:
"The Bill is one step closer to becoming law, which is welcome news. I hope the House of Lords will now ensure the Bill passes its remaining stages as quickly as possible so that action can be taken to help people everywhere who are sick of congestion, rat-running and pollution."
