Environment spokesmen in first debate of the election
25 March 1997
The environment spokesmen of the three main parties will share a platform for the first time ever on Tuesday 25 March when they each outline their parties plans and priorities for the environment and sustainable development after the election. The event, organised by Friends of the Earth (FOE), will be the first time top subject specialists from the three parties will have met before the media during this general election.
The three spokesmen Rt. Hon John Gummer MP (Conservative), Michael Meacher MP(Labour) and Matthew Taylor MP (Liberal Democrat) will each speak for approximately seven minutes. The media will then be invited to question them for half an hour. The event will be introduced by Charles Secrett (Executive Director of FOE) and chaired by Uta Bellion (FOE'S Policy Director)
Friends of the Earth has prepared a list of ten priorities it believes should form the basis of the next Government's environment and sustainable development agenda, ranging from scrapping the Salisbury bypass to green Budget reform (See attached).
