Government receives thousands of objections to salisbury bypass

3 April 1997

The Government has received thousands of objections to the Salisbury bypass since the Public Inquiry closed in April 1994, an answer to a Parliamentary Question from Ken Livingston MP has revealed [1]. In his answer, Roads Minister John Watts, says that 2,937 post-inquiry representations have so far been made to the Secretaries of State for Transport and the Environment, with over 70 per cent (2076) opposed to the bypass and 27.4 per cent (805) in favour. The majority of the representations are from the Wiltshire area.

Most of the representations (2,771: 1,956 against, 802 for) have been made since 29 October 1996 when the Secretaries of State said they were minded to confirm the go-ahead for the bypass.

Colin Hall of Salisbury Friends of the Earth said:
"Barely a week passes without further evidence emerging on the damaging nature and unpopularity of the proposed Salisbury bypass. These representations show that thousands of local people are opposed to the road and want it scrapped now. The Government would do far better investing a fraction of the road's cost in alternatives such as those we revealed last week".

* The Salisbury Transport Action Committee is planning a walk to show people the damage the road will do to Salibury's countryside. It will be held on Saturday 26 April and will start at 2 pm from the field opposite Bridge Farm in Britford. The walk -which follows the route along adjacent rights of way - will last about three hours. It is hoped that families will come for an enjoyable afternoon out.
