Queen's speech: missed opportunities for environment say foe
14 May 1997
Friends of the Earth today expressed disappointment that of 26 bills proposed in the Queen's Speech there are none specifically concerning environment or transport.
Charles Secrett, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth, said:
"We are deeply disappointed by this first Queen's Speech, and expected at least 1 bill out of 26 to focus on the environment. The Government has missed many opportunities to progress an environmental agenda through their domestic proposals - for instance with the windfall tax and the housing programme. Is this a betrayal of the manifesto commitment to put environment at the heart of policy making?
"We are very pleased to see an environmental dimension in foreign policy and international development - for instance, the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and the Common Fisheries Policy - but unless the UK delivers on an environmental agenda at home it is difficult to see what they can do globally."
