Thousands to protest about road traffic fuming mad rally - saturday 27 september 1997

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Fuming Mad Rally in Trafalgar Square, on Saturday 27 September, calling on the Government to support a new law - The Road Traffic Reduction [UK Targets] Bill [1] - which will set national targets for reducing road traffic. The mass rally, organised by Friends of the Earth, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party, The Towns Women's Guilds and the National Asthma Campaign will also draw attention to the need for tough international targets for combatting dangerous climate change [2].
The Fuming Mad Rally will be addressed by a number of leading campaigners, MPs and celebrity speakers, and will feature stalls, food and entertainments.
Charles Secrett of Friends of the Earth said:
"I hope as many people as possible will attend the Fuming Mad Rally to back our call for urgent action to combat increasing traffic and the threat of dangerous climate change. The Government has the opportunity to act on both these issues by supporting the Road Traffic Reduction (UK Targets) Bill and pushing for tough measures at the international climate summit in December."

[1] The Road Traffic Reduction [UK Targets] Bill - drafted by Friends of the Earth, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru - has been introduced to Parliament as a Private Members Bill by Plaid Cymru MP,Cynog Dafis. The Bill, which would lead to a 5 per cent reduction by 2005, and a 10 per cent cut by 2010 (based on 1990 levels), is due to be discussed early in the new year.
[2] In December World governments meet in Kyoto, Japan to decide on ways of tackling climate change. Friends of the Earth is urging the UK Government to show international leadership and press for a 20 per cent cut by 2005.
