Climate demon-stration at shell's gas bus launch with minister

20 June 1997

A 10 feet high 'Shell demon' will join placard-carrying demonstrators from Friends of the Earth International outside Shell's HQ to protest against the oil company's role in blocking international agreements to combat global climate change. The demonstration is part of an an international Day of Action against Shell, when over 100 groups across the UK and around the world will highlight the threat of climate change and expose Shell's interference in climate negotiations in the run up to the crucially important Earth Summit opening in New York on Monday 23 June.

The 'Shell demon' has a horned head in the form of a snarling Shell-logo, with flashing red eyes. It will carry a staff topped with a globe emitting clouds of smoke. Demonstrators will cordon off Shellmex House and put up a notice saying "Global Warming Warning: Do Not Enter, Climate Wrecking in Progress". The placards will say "Shell is Causing Climate Hell", "Global Warming: You can be sure of (S)hell" and "Shell: Climate Wrecker".

Charles Secrett, FOE Director, will hand in a letter to Chris Fay, Chief Executive of Shell UK urging Shell to withdraw from the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) a powerful fossil fuel lobby group attempting to block international agreement on tackling climate change. The fossil fuel industry will be lobbying against cuts in climate-changing emissions at the Earth Summit and also at the G8 Economic Summit, which starts in Denver tomorrow.
