Foe welcomes green speech by deputy pm

5 June 1997

Friends of the Earth today welcomed the speech by Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, on the Government's environment policy and the proposed review of transport policy.

Tony Juniper, Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth, said:

"This is one of the greenest speeches heard from a British politician but speeches are easier than actions. Margaret Thatcher made a green speech in 1988 but she didn't deliver the necessary environmental action.

Friends of the Earth was disappointed by the fact that there was nothing about the environment in the Queen's speech. We now need to see delivery on the promises made today and the next budget provides an ideal opportunity. We expect to see Mr Brown putting forward a package of green taxes in July which will represent a major advance in environmental policy in the UK.

On transport we want to see an immediate moratorium on road-building and Government support for national traffic reduction targets. The Road Traffic Reduction (National Targets) Bill - drafted by Friends of the Earth, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru - requiring a 10 per cent traffic reduction by 2010 will be introduced to Parliament later this month."
