Ford slammed for wrecking the planet - protesters target new car registration launches

1 August 1997

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: PROTESTERS FROM FRIENDS OF THE EARTH WILL BE OUTSIDE TGI FRIDAY'S, PURLEY WAY, CROYDON, OPPOSITE THE WATER PALACE AND CROYDON AIRPORT, FROM 11.45pm, THURSDAY, 31 JULY ONWARDS TO DEMONSTRATE AGAINST FORD MOTOR'S ATTEMPT TO WRECK THE PLANET

Ford Motors is being condemned by Friends of the Earth for actively working to wreck the planet. The car manufacturer is a member of the Global Climate Coalition (GCC), an international organisation dedicated to obstructing government action to combat climate change. Seventeen Friends of the Earth groups [2] are demonstrating outside Ford showrooms across the country and targeting the launch of new 'R' registration cars.

Friends of the Earth has written to Ford asking the company to leave the Global Climate Coalition and to stop working against international action on climate change. The company has so far failed to answer. Ford is currently celebrating 21 years as the 'nation's favourite'car manufacturer.

Anna Stanford, Climate Change Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:

"Ford is putting profits before the planet. It claims to be the nation's favourite motor manufacturer but is in danger of becoming the most despised if its customers ever find out what it's really up to. Climate change will be a disaster for the world and Ford should join the rest of humanity in trying to stop it, not lobbying for governments to do nothing."

World governments will meet in December at the UN Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, to try and reach an agreement on fighting climate change. This is the last opportunity for the foreseeable future for agreements to be signed to stop dangerous climate change.

Notes to Editors

[1] Other members of the GCC include Shell, Texaco, Vauxhall and Esso
[2] Including Bath, Birmingham, Bury, Hampstead, Preston, Nottingham, Shrewsbury, York,Mid & North Herts, Leeds, Exeter, Hackney, Tottenham and Croydon.
