Dirty fuel dropped in national power u-turn

11 September 1997

Friends of the Earth today welcomed National Power's decision not to proceed with its plans to burn orimulsion, a highly polluting fuel, in Pembroke power station. Friends of the Earth has taken a leading role in opposing plans to burn orimulsion in West Wales and was preparing to oppose National Power's plans at a public inquiry. This will not now be necessary.

Tony Juniper, Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth, said:

“We are very pleased that National Power has decided to spare the countryside from even more acid rain damage and pleased to hear that the danger of a spill of this stuff in the sea has now been considerably diminished”.

“Most people locally will welcome this announcement, especially those involved with fishing, tourism and farming. The proposals for orimulsion burning posed unacceptable threats to health, the environment and the local economy and we can all breathe a sigh of relief that this episode is behind us”.

“We now need local industry, the Government and the Welsh Office to work together with the local community to develop new energy policies that will not only protect the environment but offer real long term prospects for jobs and the local economy. Orimulsion wouldn't have done that and we look forward to proposals that will”.
