Welcome for labour nuclear and integrated transport reviews
1 October 1997
Friend's of the Earth responded to today's speeches by Environment Minister, Michael Meacher and Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions, John Prescott, and also welcomed the passing of composite motion 22 on nuclear reprocessing.
Tony Juniper, Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth, said:
We welcome calls for an independent review of nuclear reprocessing and dry waste storage of used fuel. Nuclear reprocessing is a hopeless waste of taxpayers money which is turning Britain into the world's nuclear dustbin and should be abandoned immediately.
Tony Juniper continued:
Mr Prescott's commitment to an integrated transport strategy and public transport is good but we are disappointed that the Government has failed to endorse road traffic reduction targets. The Government has also failed to resolve the mystery of whether its twenty per cent target for reducing emissions of carbon dioxide is conditional on the actions of other countries. Mr Blair's claims to global leadership and his desire to make Britain a 'beacon to the world'will ring hollow without international leadership on the climate change crisis.
This Government is obsessed with targets and yet refuses to consider them in relation to road traffic reduction and climate change - two of this country's most pressing environmental issues. The time has come for the prevarication to end and clear targets to be announced.
