New public air pollution information system "important step forward" but action still needed to tackle traffic
19 November 1997
Friends of the Earth welcomed the Government's new public air pollution information system, announced today by Michael Meacher, but said that further action was needed to reduce car use during pollution episodes.
Tony Bosworth, Friends of the Earth's Air Pollution Campaigner, said:
This is an important step forward: at last the Government has recognised that the public were being misled about air pollution. The new system should provide more accurate and more understandable information. However the Government still has to grasp the nettle of tackling the causes of the pollution, and in particular how are they going to get people out of their cars when pollution levels are high?
