The IPCC synthesis report and the elephant in the room

30 Oct, 2014 (PDF) 496.12 KB

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will publish a synthesis report at its meeting on 27-31st October 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. A key indicator of its success will be if the synthesis brings home to politicians the urgent need to significantly reduce carbon pollution inequalities in order to avoid dangerous climate change. Whilst tackling climate change and addressing inequality is ultimately a moral and political issue for global citizens and our political representatives – climate scientists can help to frame the issue properly by addressing the ‘elephant in the room’, which is inequality. They should make it clear that without reducing inequalities it will not be possible to avoid the worst of climate change.
