Big business debate in the midlands

29 January 2003

Does big business rule your world?

Friends of the Earth is hosting a panel debate on "Does big business rule your world?" at Birmingham Rep on Thursday 30th January, as part of its week of activities challenging corporate power in the Midlands [1].

The discussion will be chaired by Liana Stupples, Policy and Campaigns Director at Friends of the Earth, and will look at the growing debate around corporate social responsibility, corporate accountability and concerns about the impacts of global trade.

Panel guests at the event include:

  • Danny Carrigan, National Secretary of the trade union Amicus' AEEU Section;

  • local farmer and free range egg producer Ian Hannington;

  • John Turner, Head of Environment Law with Birmingham solicitors, Wragge & Co, and Chairman of the Environment Agency Midlands Regional Environment Protection Advisory Committee;

  • Craig Bennett, Corporate Accountability Campaigner with Friends of the Earth.

Friends of the Earth is holding a week of activities in the Midlands highlighting the role played by big business in wider society, including the launch of Friends of the Earth's report on "Big Business in the Midlands" [2], a local food night, film festival, a farmer's market and an open house on Saturday 1st February.

Friends of the Earth West Midlands Campaign Co-ordinator Chris Crean said:

"Big business affects all aspects of all of our lives, from the way we work to the food we eat. This debate brings together a range of different players in the business game to discuss those impacts. We will also be looking at the relationship between business and the Government - and asking the question `who is in charge?'"

The debate, which starts at 7.15pm, is open to members of the public. Admission is free.
