Plans for new South East airport slammed
18 January 2011
Boris Johnson's backing today (Tuesday, 18 January 2011) for a brand new South East airport has been criticised by Friends of the Earth.
Friends of the Earth's London Campaigner Jenny Bates said:
"So much for Boris Johnson's promise to make London the greenest city in the world - this airport would have a massive impact on local communities and wildlife, and completely undermine efforts to tackle climate change.
"The Mayor should be putting his efforts into creating a cutting edge low-carbon transport system for the capital - backing a huge new airport further tarnishes his already dwindling environmental credibility."

1. Friends of the Earth's Rights and Justice Centre is acting for local residents fighting plans by Newham Council to allow London City airport to expand. The issue is currently being considered by the High Court and a decision is expected shortly.
