The Barker Review of the UK's housing needs is a disaster for the environment and people, Friends of the Earth said today.
The environmental group says the review, commissioned by the Treasury, paints a potentially bleak image of the UK, with large numbers of new homes leading to localised water shortages, high levels of pollution and increased congestion.
Friends of the Earth's Director Tony Juniper said:
"The Barker Review doesn't address the essential need for sustainable growth across the whole of the UK. The real priority is to provide affordable social housing across the country and to deal with the large scale abandonment of homes in the north."
"Treasury seems intent on dismantling the planning system in the mistaken belief that encouraging growth in the south east is the only way to grow the UK's economy."
