Friends of the Earth welcomed the Sustainable Development Commission's report [1], published today and said it represented a yellow card to the Government's complacency.
The five-year review of the Government's performance on sustainable development says that we are currently living in a state of delusion if we think the Government is improving quality of life. The report says that more needs to be done to tackle problems such as waste, rising traffic levels and obesity.
Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director Liana Stupples said:
"Today's report is a real wake-up call for Tony Blair to stop talking and actually deliver his promise to put the public and the environment at the heart of Government.
"The Government thinks that it is giving people a better quality of life, but problems such as our growing waste mountain, rising traffic levels and climate changewill only get worse if they are not tackled. Instead of pursuing policies that assume we have to have more roads and more airports, whatever the social and environmental cost, the Government should be putting money in to developing sustainable alternatives, including a transport system that works for people and the environment."
