Blair's climate warning welcomed

14 September 2004

Friends of the Earth warmly welcomed Tony Blair's key note speech today on climate change warning that the world faces an environmental catastrophe unless it acts to tackle global climate change.

Friends of the Earth director Tony Juniper said:

"Global warming dwarfs all other threats to the security of humankind and the stability of the environment. The Prime Minister has sounded the alarm and society must now respond at all levels. There is still time to make the changes necessary to avert the worst catastrophes that could accompany rapid climate change, but there is no room for delay. Tony Blair must use the review of the British climate change programme later this year to set out the actions we can take at home. He can also use that opportunity to show the world that we can fight climate change without relying on hugely expensive nuclear power.

Nuclear power produces waste which remains dangerous for tens of thousands of years, and nuclear facilities are uniquely vulnerable to terrorist attack. Furthermore the technology of nuclear power is intimately connected with the technology used to make nuclear weapons. If we are serious about fighting climate change as a global threat then all countries must have access to the same technologies. If we use nuclear, then we will have to accept that everyone else can too, including countries like Iran and North Korea."
