25 April 2006
Commenting on the announcement of reduced first quarter profits by oil giant BP today (Tuesday 25 April), Friends of the Earth Corporate Accountability Campaigner Craig Bennett said:"BP's fall in profits, at a time of record oil prices, reflect a poor performance from the company on health, safety and environmental issues. The oil spill in Alaska is just the latest incident to raise questions about BP's environmental standards - and there are concerns about the risk of leaks on the Baku Ceyhan pipeline."
"BP has invested millions of pounds in telling the world it is going green, but this company's core business is dirty at heart. BP needs to do more to shift to cleaner sources of energy - but it must also clean up the rest of its business, operating to high environmental and social requirements across the board. It is time the UK Government took action to ensure that British companies are required to operate to higher standards - rather than spending their money on telling us all how good they are."
BP reported profits totalling $5.27 billion (£2.95 billion) between January and March compared with $5.49 billion (£3.07 billion) for the same period last year.
