Thumbs up for Bristol's serious climate target

11 November 2009

Last night, Bristol Council signed up to Friends of the Earth's Get Serious About CO2 campaign, committing to reduce the area's emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020 and produce an action plan showing how the cuts will be made.

Friends of the Earth Executive Director Andy Atkins said:

"It is fantastic that Bristol Council is doing its bit in the fight against climate change.

"The Council's new target to reduce emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 is spot on with the latest science, which shows that any less won't be enough to prevent dangerous climate change.

"Hundreds of people from Bristol called for a serious target to cut emissions as part of Friends of the Earth's Get Serious About CO2 campaign - it's great that the Council has listened to them.

"Local action to cut emissions will create jobs, boost the local economy and slash people's fuel bills"

Notes to Editors

1. Friends of the Earth's campaign - Get Serious About CO2 - is calling on councils to commit to cutting carbon dioxide in the local area by at least 40 per cent by 2020 - and produce an action plan setting out how it's going to happen. The campaign is also calling for a minimum level of action for all councils, set in line with the latest science, and for more money and less hassle so councils can get on with local action to cut CO2. www.getseriousaboutco2.com
