British Gas increases gas and electricity bills

8 July 2011

Commenting on the announcement today (Friday 8 July 2011) that British Gas is increasing fuel bills by an average 18 per cent for gas and 16 per cent for electricity, averaging a total cost increase of £190 per year, Friends of the Earth's warm homes campaigner Dave Timms said:

"This latest price hike is yet another sign that our energy system is broken - it's a disgrace that companies like British Gas make massive profits by selling more and more expensive energy while families freeze in poorly insulated homes.

"Our energy bills will continue to rocket without faster and tougher Government action to warm our homes and cut our dependence on imported fossil fuels.

"Only then will households be able to stop fearing the winter cold and the pain of massive energy bills."

Notes to editors

1.    Friends of the Earth are calling on the Government to take action in the Energy Bill currently going through Parliament to ensure all councils have a climate change strategy, bring forward to 2016 the proposed minimum energy efficiency standard for rented homes and ensure the UK has a compressive energy efficiency strategy which is sufficient to meet carbon targets and end fuel poverty.
