Brown's green speech: climate must be at the heart of next week's Budget

12 March 2007

Government to unveil Climate Change Bill details

The Chancellor must use his final Budget on 21 March to try to salvage his green credentials, Friends of the Earth said today. The call comes on the day that both Gordon Brown and David Cameron prepare to make keynote speeches on the environment [1] (Monday 12 March).

Tomorrow (Tuesday) the Government publishes details of its draft Climate Change Bill. The campaign for a new law to tackle climate change has been led by Friends of the Earth through The Big Ask climate campaign [2].

Friends of the Earth is urging Gordon Brown to put tackling climate change at the heart of next week's Budget by raising taxes on polluting activities and making it cheaper and easier for people to cut their emissions. Despite expressions of concern, the Chancellor has failed to make any significant contribution to reducing UK carbon dioxide emissions.

Friends of the Earth's director, Tony Juniper said:

“Gordon Brown must use his final Budget to tackle climate change. The Chancellor's Budgets have largely been woeful. He must demonstrate that he has the political courage to lead the UK towards a low carbon economy. And he can start by making it cheaper and easier for people to cut their emissions. This must include cutting road tax for more of the most fuel efficient cars and substantially increasing it for gas-guzzlers, and a package of measures that provides strong financial incentives for householders to save energy and cut emissions. We need action not words.”

“The Chancellor must also give his backing to a strong climate change law, which must include annual cuts in carbon dioxide of at least three per cent.”

Friends of the Earth is calling on the Chancellor to put climate change at the heart of his 2007 Budget. Measures should include:

Gordon Brown is due to make a keynote environmental speech to the Green Alliance on Monday 12 March.

Friends of the Earth has led the campaign for a new climate change law through The Big Ask climate campaign. The environmental campaign group is calling for the law to include mandatory annual cuts in UK carbon dioxide emissions of at least three per cent. The call has been backed by a wide cross-section of individuals and organizations including just under two thirds of MPs. More info: www.thebigask.com
