MP report shows bus services need more support
11 August 2011
Commenting on a report published today (Thursday 11 August 2011) by the Transport Select Committee of MPs in the House of Commons, showing that over 70 per cent of local authorities have decided to reduce funding for supported bus services and in some cases, removed subsidised services altogether, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Richard Dyer said:
"Spending cuts have come as a devastating blow to those who depend on buses to get from A to B - elderly people especially.
"Buses are also a greener, congestion-busting alternative to driving cars and it's vital they're given full financial support to keep the country mobile.
"The Government should ensure councils prioritise funding for transport measures that reduce traffic, cut emissions and help to tackle pollution - as well as encouraging healthier lifestyles."

1. The full report is available to download.
2. Friends of the Earth is urging MPs to sign EDM 1986 calling on the Government to ensure buses receive the funding and support that they need.
3. Recent research by Friends of the Earth showed that councils up and down the country are failing to invest in greener alternatives to driving cars, despite money made available to them to do so.
