Call for international climate change research programme

4 August 2006

Friends of the Earth today (4 August) welcomed the call by Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society, for a publicly funded international research programme into new energy technologies. The plea came in an article published in the US journal, Science.

Friends of the Earths Head of Campaigns, Mike Childs said:

"It's good that Governments are talking about the need to tackle climate change and the need for energy security but they also need to back the solutions. Many technologies already exist - such as loft insulation - that could make a big difference to our carbon emissions. Governments need to promote these solutions as well as investing in energy technologies for the future."

Friends of the Earths climate campaign, The Big Ask Campaign is calling for the introduction of a new climate change law which would force the Government to make annual cuts in the amount carbon dioxide emitted by the UK. This would include action to promote the existing solutions to climate change as well as support for research and development into new technologies.
