Press release
Cameron planning intervention must lead to major changes
21 September 2011
Friends of the Earth has given a cautious welcome to David Cameron's letter to the National Trust which recognises the need for the planning system to balance the needs of the environment, society and the economy, but said a legal definition of sustainable development was essential.
Friends of the Earth's Executive Director, Andy Atkins said:
"The Prime Minister's intervention is encouraging - but this must lead to fundamental changes to these planning reforms to protect our countryside and lay the foundations for the low-carbon future he has promised.
"A legal definition of sustainable development is crucial - without it councils will struggle to prevent damaging building projects going ahead.
"We need a planning system that encourages new green jobs and industries, delivers low-carbon, affordable housing and safeguards our environment for the future."
