Cameron's speech fails the environment

8 October 2009

Commenting on David Cameron's speech at today's Conservative party conference, Friends of the Earth's Head of Climate Change, Mike Childs, said:

"David Cameron re-built the Conservative Party's electoral prospects on a commitment to tackle climate change and go green by voting blue. That showed real leadership, but in his speech the environment barely featured in his vision for Britain.

"The Conservatives do not yet have the polices to rise to the challenge of tackling climate change - this close to the general election, they should have.

"It is a great disappointment that David Cameron's speech today failed to show that protecting the environment and building a green economy would be a priority for a Conservative government.

"Insulating our homes and developing clean, secure energy supplies will help create new green jobs and industries and should have been at the heart of David Cameron's vision for rebuilding our recession-hit economy.

"New low carbon industries and investors urgently need confidence that a Conservative Government would prioritise the development of a green economy, but this speech will not have given it to them."
