CANN Nottinghamshire rise to the climate change challenge?
28 June 2006
A new alliance of local voluntary and community organisations is asking people in Nottinghamshire to make a personal pledge to help tackle climate change at their launch event on Saturday 1st July next to the Robin Hood statue at Nottingham Castle [1].
Climate Action Network Nottinghamshire (CANN) [2] has invited Nottinghamshire MPs and councillors to come along and make their own pledges; and Sherwood MP Paddy Tipping has committed to be there on the day. Decision makers who cannot attend the event are being encouraged to send in pledges by email or post that can be displayed on a pledge tree at the site.
Callie Lister of CANN and East Midlands Friends of the Earth said:
"We know that climate change is the most serious threat that we are facing, and many organisations are working hard to find solutions to the problem. We wanted to bring together those organisations so that we can unite our efforts to help combat climate change."
Every individual who makes a personal pledge to help combat climate change at the event will receive a voucher for free cycle training and the chance to win a new or a reconditioned bicycle.
Representatives from the organisations involved will be on hand to give people practical advice about what they can do to make a difference and have a positive impact on climate change.
Callie Lister added:
"This event provides the opportunity not only for individuals to think about what they can do in their daily lives, but also for our decision makers to show us that they are serious about tackling climate change [3]. We hope that this will be the first of many events in Nottinghamshire that will highlight the positive solutions that exist to deal with climate change."
Organisations interested in joining CANN can email info@nottsclimate.org.uk or call 0115 9508 516. Individuals that want to know more can also visit www.nottsclimate.org.uk
The event is supported by Nottingham City Council.
