Carbon calculator must not be a substitute for Government action

20 June 2007

The Government has launched a carbon calculator this week to enable people to work out how much they are contributing to climate change.

Friends of the Earth's climate campaigner, Martyn Williams said:

"Carbon calculators can play a useful role in helping people take simple measures to cut their contribution to climate change - and save on fuel bills too. But this must not distract from the crucial role that Government must play in cutting carbon dioxide emissions. Ministers must strengthen their proposals for a new climate change law to ensure that UK carbon dioxide emissions are cut by at least three per cent every year, and introduce measures that make it cheaper and easier for people to go green to help ensure that this happens.

Friends of the Earth has led the campaign for a new climate change law through The Big Ask climate campaign. The Government has already agreed to introduce a new climate law, but Friends of the Earth says it must be strengthened to ensure:

That UK carbon dioxide emissions are cut by at least three per cent every year;

That the UK's share of international shipping and aviation emissions are also included.
