Government publishes carbon action plan
8 March 2011
Commenting on the Government's carbon action plan, published today (Tuesday 8 March 2011), Friends of the Earth's Senior Climate Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:
"Rising oil prices and the Middle East crisis highlight the urgent need to wean the UK economy off its oil addiction - but this plan falls significantly short of the action that would be needed to meet the targets recommended by the Government's own climate advisor.
"We're all paying the price for our fossil fuel dependency - bold political action is urgently needed to create a safer, cleaner future."

Notes to editors:
1.The Government current target is for a 34 per cent cut in emissions by 2020. Last year the Committee on Climate Change called on Ministers to increase the UK's mandatory 2020 climate change target to a 37 per cent cut in emissions (based on 1990 levels) and for a 60 per cent cut in emissions by 2030. Friends of the Earth says both these targets are too weak to enable this country to play its part in averting dangerous global temperature rises. The environmental campaign charity says that the UK should cut its emissions by at least 42 per cent by 2020, regardless of what other nations do. See CCC press release: UK should commit to a 60% cut in emissions by 2030 .
