Press release
Chris Huhne right to challenge short-sighted approach to economy
26 October 2011
Commenting on Chris Huhne's speech at the Renewable UK annual conference today (Wednesday 26 October 2011), in which he challenged Chancellor George Osborne over his anti-green agenda and highlighted the economic benefits to Britain of investing in green energy, Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins said:
"Chris Huhne is right to challenge George Osborne over his short-sighted approach to the economy - the chance to drive forward growth by making better use of clean energy is ripe and there for the taking.
"Families and businesses will continue to face rocketing fuel bills if we stay hooked on increasingly expensive fossil fuels - and thousands of UK jobs are at stake.
"If the coalition is serious about securing us energy we can all afford, David Cameron must intervene and rebuild business trust - failing to do so will drive investment abroad."

1. Earlier this month Friends of the Earth launched its new campaign, Final Demand, calling for a public inquiry into the Big Six energy companies and a fair energy system. The giant energy companies are making huge profits by keeping us hooked on expensive fossil fuels. The campaign is asking people to sign its to David Cameron at www.foe.co.uk/finaldemand
2. Friends of the Earth research shows that a green energy revolution is needed to stabilise energy bills in the long run. For information see: http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_releases/emr_12072011.html
3. Friends of the Earth is deeply concerned that the Government will shortly announce funding cuts to the feed-in tariff which helps ordinary people, businesses, councils and schools to produce their own clean energy through systems like solar panels - thousands of UK jobs are at stake.
