Climate negotiations: Cameron must come clean on US spying revelations
Commenting on reports that the United States spied on negotiators at the 2009 climate summit in Copenhagen, Friends of the Earth’s International Climate Campaigner Asad Rehman said:
“The United States Government already has a pretty shameful record when it comes to global efforts to cut emissions, so claims it’s been spying on climate negotiators should come as little surprise.
“These revelations are also incredibly damaging to the UK Government, which portrays itself as a champion of international action on climate change – and will fuel growing concerns that environmental activists are being targeted.
“If David Cameron wants to rebuild trust in the UK’s role in these crucial negotiations, he must come clean about the Government’s involvement in this scandal.
“And President Obama, who this week said ‘climate change is a fact’ and pledged action to tackle it, must end any dirty tricks and show some real leadership to secure meaningful action that will protect all our futures.”
