Climate change One-minute film makes waves on Youtube
4 October 2007
Friends of the Earth's Green Film Competition, in association with Filminute, ranks as the #1 not-for-profit channel of all time on YouTube.
This feat was achieved in a short period of time, primarily driven by a one-minute film called Polar Bears that has attracted over 600,000 views during the past week. The Friends of the Earth channel has attracted well over one million views since its launch in May.
Earlier this year, Filminute, the international one-minute film festival, approached the environmental campaigning charity with a proposal to expand the festival's call for entry to Friend's of the Earth's audiences and supporters. Friends of the Earth responded by organizing a "green film" competition, with the best entries eligible for submission to Filminute. Polar Bears is one of only two films to make the final shortlist for both competitions.
The winning filmmakers will be announced week of October 15, 2007.
Tony Juniper, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth said:
"One-minute green films are a fantastic way to channel some of the UK's creative talent into communicating environmental issues. We hope these films will inspire more people to get involved with Friends of the Earth."
John Ketchum, Executive Director and Head of Jury, Filminute said:
"One-minute films are an excellent and contemporary way to engage and entertain a wide audience around an important issue. Issue-oriented one-minute films performed extremely well among the shortlisted films at Filminute 2007. Polar Bears attracted votes and high ratings from all over the world."
Eskimo Productions is the Australian creative media company behind the popular one-minute Polar Bears film. The gently humorous and provocative film about climate change was originally created for the Australian Greens Party senator Christine Milne, in collaboration with Australian comedian John Clarke.
