Climate Disaster Looming
18 August 2004
A new report from European Environment Agency, published today, warns that more frequent and costly storms, floods, droughts and other extreme weather in Europe will result from global warming, threatening agriculture, melting glaciers and leading to rising sea levels for centuries to come [1].
The report, Impacts of climate change in Europe: an indicator-based assessment (see http://reports.eea.eu.int/climate_report_2_2004/en) says that Europe must both work to cut greenhouse gas emissions but also adapt to deal with these impacts.
Friends of the Earth Campaigns Director Mike Childs said:
"The consequences of climate change are a very real and dangerous threat, yet international leaders seem to pay little heed to the warning bells. We need decisive action to cut greenhouse gas emissions, but our Prime Minister has allowed carbon dioxide pollution to increase since he came to power. He must urgently put in place policies that will see year on year reductions in emissions, from transport, from industry and from household energy use. But he must also convince his fellow world leaders that climate change is as big a threat to people and the planet as international terrorism".
Friends of the Earth has launched a climate challenge to encourage individuals to do more to tackle carbon dioxide emissions in their daily life. For more information and tips on saving energy see climate challenge.
