Coca-Cola to open new plastic bottle recycling facility

7 March 2011

Commenting on the announcement today of a new plastic bottle recycling facility in Lincolnshire to be opened by Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd (CCE) and ECO Plastics, Friends of the Earth's resource use campaigner Julian Kirby said:

"A new Coca-Cola and ECO Plastics recycling facility for plastic bottles is great news - it shows businesses are willing to play their part in reducing rubbish.

"Investment in recycling cuts climate-changing emissions, creates jobs, and helps to develop the market for recycled materials in the UK whilst saving businesses and councils from the rising costs of landfill and incineration.

"The Government must drive forward further improvements in recycling and aim to halve the amount of rubbish in our black bin bags by 2020 - simple collection services for household recycling would be a good place to start."

Notes

1.       Friends of the Earth research in 2009 showed that the UK wastes over £650 million every year by burying or burning materials that could be recycled.

2.       Friends of the Earth research in 2010 showed that if the UK was to adopt a target to recycle 70 per cent of municipal waste by 2025, we could create 29,400 new jobs in recycling, 14,700 in supply chains, and 7,300 in the wider economy (relative to 2006).

3.       Friends of the Earth's campaigning brought recycling to your doorstep - help us to go even further by getting the Government to halve the rubbish that has to go into our black bin bags by 2020. Visit www.foe.co.uk/waste for more information.
