Concerns over household chemicals

The Environment Agency today called for new research into a common anti-bacterial agent used in household products following fears over its impact on the environment and wildlife. Triclosan, which often appears under the name of "Microban", is used in products such as toothpaste, cosmetics and even chopping boards.
Friends of the Earth has been lobbying retailers for four years to remove Triclosan from their products.
Friends of the Earth's safer chemicals campaigner Mary Taylor, commented:
"Companies should take immediate steps to remove Triclosan from their products. Chemicals which contaminate the environment and human tissue are intrinsically undesirable. We shouldn't be waiting for the results of more detailed studies before taking action. People's health and the environment must be put first."
