Commenting on day one of the congestion charge, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Tony Bosworth said:
"We are delighted that day one of the congestion charge appears to have passed off relatively smoothly. Hopefully, this will continue in the weeks and months ahead, and encourage other cities around the country to follow suit."
"Predictably the Conservatives have spent the day attacking the charge. But the only alternative they have to offer is a return to the same short-sighted policies that have brought traffic chaos to our roads for far too long. And the deafening silence from Labour shows how fearful they are of upsetting the motoring lobby. It's little wonder that our transport system is in such a mess."
