Conservative Conference environment day - Friends of the Earth comment

4 October 2007

Commenting on Peter Ainsworth's speech on Quality of Life at the Conservative Party Conference today (3 October) Tony Juniper, Director of Friends of the Earth said:

"Peter Ainsworth rightly identifies a revolution is needed in the way that our energy is generated and supplied. Investing in clean renewable energy must be at the fore front of this.

"We are pleased that the Conservatives have joined a growing body of opinion in favour of feed in tariffs. Ensuring people who install solar panels and other forms of domestic renewable energy get a premium rate for the electricity they sell back to the grid will make installing renewable energy at home a good investment for your pocket and the planet."

"We also welcome Peter Ainsworth's support for the introduction of a waste heat levy. UK power stations waste a huge amount of energy through heat loss. This levy will help ensure energy is not wasted but put to good use in heating our homes and businesses."

Despite some positive announcements we are concerned that the Conservatives want to withdraw Government support for wind farms. The UK is one of the richest countries in Europe in terms of wind power - it could provide a significant proportion of the UKs clean energy needs and we can not leave its development to the whims of the market."
