New cash for cycling facilities at stations
28 September 2009
Reacting to today's Government announcement of funding for cycling facilities at railway stations, Friends of the Earth's Senior Climate Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:
"Carbon dioxide emissions from UK transport must be urgently slashed to prevent dangerous climate change.
"This new cash for cycling will make it easier for people to leave their cars at home.
"Cycling is quick, reliable and keeps you in shape.
"Local councils must also play their part in kick-starting a cycling renaissance by building better cycling facilities into their local transport plans and making it easier and safer for people to get on their bikes."
Notes to Editors
1. Friends of the Earth's campaign - Get Serious About CO2 - is calling on
councils to commit to cutting carbon dioxide in the local area by at least 40 per cent by 2020 - and produce an action plan detailing how it's going to happen. The campaign is also calling for more money and less hassle for councils to do things like improve public transport, insulate more homes and install green energy, and for a new duty on councils that fail to act on climate change.
