David Cameron calls on Whitehall to cut energy use
30 September 2010
Commenting on David Cameron's call today for Whitehall departments to cut energy use, Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director Craig Bennett said:
"Slashing energy waste is one of the most cost effective ways to tackle climate change.
"Moves to make Whitehall more energy efficient are welcome. It's important for the Government to take the lead by reducing emissions from all its operations.
"But we also need a comprehensive nationwide programme, led by local councils, to enable the whole country to benefit from energy saving.
"This would not only cut fuel bills - it would also help tackle fuel poverty, create new green jobs and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels."
Notes to editors:
Local councils around the UK are calling for a new local carbon budgets law to enable them to coordinate local action on climate change.
