Govt publishes proposals to decarbonise UK power
5 February 2013
Commenting on the publication of Government amendment to the Energy Bill today (Tuesday 5 February), about a target to cut carbon from UK power, Friends of the Earth's Energy Campaigner Donna Hume said:
"A long list of businesses from Aviva to Vestas want a clean power target set in UK law because it will provide certainty for investors - and in doing so create thousands of British jobs.
"Yet the Government's proposals today leave businesses entirely in the dark - Ministers say they might introduce a decarbonisation target in the future, but they won't say what it will be or when it will happen.
"These proposals are a far cry from the clear policy signed up to by the Liberal Democrats last year - but the issue isn't about to go away, with the debate heating up over the coming weeks.
"Everyone from Labour and leading backbench Tories to the Church of England wants to see the Coalition demonstrate its long-term commitment to renewable energy."
