Government should be more transparent over driving taxes
24 July 2009
Commenting on a report out today by the Transport Committee suggesting motorists are mistrustful of the way the Government is spending money gained from road tax, Friends of the Earth's Senior Transport Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:
"Driving charges have a vital role to play in cutting carbon emissions from road transport - but the Government must get better at explaining how this money is used.
"Higher car tax for gas guzzlers and road pricing schemes are needed to help cut congestion and encourage people to drive smarter cars - and more money must be earmarked for improving public transport and providing facilities for cycling and walking."
