Reaction to Ed Miliband's leadership speech
28 September 2010
Responding to Ed Miliband's Labour leadership speech today (Tuesday 28 September 2010), Friends of the Earth's Executive Director Andy Atkins said:
"Ed Miliband is absolutely right, protecting the planet for future generations is the most important challenge facing us today.
"After only two days in the job it's not surprising that his speech has more vision than detail, but more detail is needed fast.
"As Leader of the Opposition he must defend key green schemes from Government cuts and champion new laws to build a low-carbon economy - he doesn't have to wait five years to be elected.
"If he does this he will have the support of many development, environment and social organisations who have long campaigned in this area.
"We're delighted that the new Labour leader recognises that quality of life is more than just economics.
"It's time to build a strong, safe and greener future, rather than try to patch up the discredited economic model of the past."
