Funding announced for electric car charging points
19 November 2009
Commenting on today's announcement by Transport Secretary Lord Andrew Adonis that £30 million in Government funding will be provided for trailblazer cities and regions to build charging points for electric and plug-in hybrid cars, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Richard Dyer said:
"More charging points will make it easier for people to drive electric vehicles, but these cars are only as green as the electricity that supplies them and Britain's renewable energy supplies are badly underdeveloped.
"Ministers must urgently invest in renewable sources of energy that are abundant in the UK - like wind, tidal and wave - to ensure that these cars and our homes and businesses all make efficient use of clean green fuel.
"But broader changes are also needed to slash emissions from transport and we welcome Lord Adonis' support for the promotion of smarter initiatives that reduce traffic such as car sharing schemes and increase cycling and walking.
"In these tough financial times Government funding for transport must be prioritised for initiatives that cut carbon and offer better value for money than expensive new roads which increase carbon emissions and do nothing to tackle climate change."
