Government publishes provisional 2008 emissions statistics
26 March 2009
Commenting on the provisional 2008 estimates of UK greenhouse gas emissions published by the Government today, Friends of the Earth director Andy Atkins said:
"The slight fall in UK emissions last year appears more linked to the UK's economic challenges than to the Government's climate change strategy."
"The Government is still failing to take urgent action to slash UK greenhouse gas emissions. It must build on this small fortuitous fall by putting big plans in place to drive emissions down much faster."
"Ministers must get much more ambitious and consistent about developing a low-carbon future. This must include putting climate change at the heart of next month's budget and agreeing to cut UK greenhouse gas emissions by at least 42 per cent by 2020."
"Urgent green action could create tens of thousands of jobs by cutting energy waste and developing the UK's huge renewable energy resources - and show genuine global leadership ahead of crucial UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen later this year."
