European businesses support EU move to 30 per cent emissions reduction target
21 July 2010
Speaking in response to a letter due to be published in the Financial Times today (Wednesday 21 July 2010) signed by the CEOs of 27 major European businesses, in support of the EU moving to a target of a 30 per cent cut in emissions by 2020, Friends of the Earth's Executive Director Andy Atkins said:
"This letter shows that there is major support amongst businesses in Europe for the EU to do more on climate change.
"Many business lobby groups are still stuck in the dark ages arguing against tougher action, but more and more business leaders are realising that the way out of the current recession is through taking concrete steps towards a low-carbon economy - and making sure they have the incentives for investment that a higher target would provide.
"Yet to have even a reasonable chance of effectively tackling climate change, European Governments need to be bolder and aim for cuts of at least 40 per cent by 2020, without offsetting. This would send an even stronger signal to investors that the EU is serious about becoming a leader in developing a low-carbon economy, new jobs and new industries."
